Petition

End Complicity with Israeli Crimes

petition

In July 2013, Universities Canada (formerly the AUCC) signed an agreement with the Israeli Association of University Heads to foster institutional ties between Canadian and Israeli universities.

Israeli universities are deeply implicated in the denial of Palestinian rights.

The July 2013 MOU makes Canadian universities complicit.

We call on Universities Canada to rescind this agreement.

Sign your name to demand that Universities Canada break ties with Israeli apartheid!

The international boycott of Israeli academic institutions is gaining momentum, yet Canadian universities are strengthening their ties with Israel. In 2013, Universities Canada (formerly the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada) and the Association of University Heads of Israel signed a Memorandum of Understanding promoting links between post-secondary institutions in the two countries.

Israeli universities play a crucial role in their country’s apartheid regime, whether through the development of military technologies, the architecture of settlements, or the creation of Hebrew names for ethnically cleansed Palestinian villages. The Universities Canada framework agreement – which calls for the regularization of joint research, teaching, and other projects – marks an institutionalization of Canadian university complicity in the oppression of Palestinians through occupation, second class citizenship or exile.

In 2005, more than 270 Palestinian civil society organizations issued the call for a campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions to pressure Israeli to recognize the fundamental rights of Palestinians. This call has been gaining ground at universities and colleges around the world. The framework agreement between Universities Canada and Israeli universities is designed to increase precisely the kind of institutional arrangements Palestinians have urged us to boycott. We urge faculty at universities across Canada to take a collective stand by signing the following letter:

Sign your name to demand that Universities Canada break ties with Israeli apartheid!
